2018 Extended Tirage Sunflower Sutra
Vineyards:
Pinot Noir from the Escolle Vineyard (Santa Lucia Highlands), Pinot Meunier from the Dommen Vineyard (Sonoma County), Chardonnay from the Durney Vineyard (Monterey), Chardonnay from the Rorick Heritage Vineyard (Sierra Foothills), Chardonnay from Manchester Ridge (Mendocino Ridge)
Winemaking:
The grapes were whole-cluster pressed, settled overnight and fermented in a combination of stainless steel and neutral French Oak. Aged an additional 5 months before secondary fermentation. Aged 38 months in bottle before disgorging by hand. This aging created a textured fruit profile that speaks as much to the California sun as it does to the lean, mineral-driven quality of cool-climate California. The blend is made up of 41% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir, and 26% Pinot Meunier. 12.1% Alc./Vol.
Tasting Notes:
Lemon Zest. Pear. Red Apple. Marzipan.
Why We Like It:
This project has always been about wines that show a balance between the sunny quality of California vineyards and the mineral edge that comes from cool climate growing conditions. The 2018 Sunflower Sutra is the wine that started it all.
